How to Do a Hard Refresh in Your Browser
Sometimes your browser saves an old version of a webpage in its cache, which can prevent new updates from showing. Doing a hard refresh (also called a force reload) clears the cache for the current page and reloads the most recent version.
Follow the instructions for your browser:
Google Chrome
Windows:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + R
- Or press Ctrl + F5
- Or hold Ctrl and click the Reload button (⟳)
Mac:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + R
- Or hold Shift and click the Reload button (⟳)
Safari (Mac only)
Safari doesn’t have a direct hard refresh shortcut, but you can clear the cache and reload:
- Press Option (⌥) + Command (⌘) + E to empty the cache
- Then press Command (⌘) + R to reload
Tip: If you enable the Develop menu (Safari > Settings > Advanced > “Show Develop menu in menu bar”), you’ll see an Empty Caches option. Use this, then reload.
Microsoft Edge
(Same as Chrome, since Edge is based on Chromium.)
Windows:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + R
- Or press Ctrl + F5
- Or hold Ctrl and click the Reload button (⟳)
Mac:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + R
- Or hold Shift and click the Reload button (⟳)
✅ When to use this: If a page looks broken, outdated, or you’ve been told “clear your cache and refresh,” try a hard refresh before doing a full cache clear.
